JOÃO TAVARES DE PINA NATURAL WINES

João Tavares de Pina
Dão, Portugal

Overseeing 13 hectares of vineyards in the Dão region of Portugal, João Tavares de Pina creates a range of Portugeuse natural wines with indigneous grapes, in the depths of a beautiful granite valley. Surrounded by forests and clay, his vines sit at 500m, located in Penalva de Castelo.

Originally working with older vines, João focused on more classic expressions of Jaen and Tourigo nacional, aged in wood with long ageing within the bottle. Since 2013 he has found ways to experiment with lesser-known Portugeuse grapes such as Terrantez, Uva dog, Arinto, Rufete, Bastardo, under the label Rufia.

Rufia is João’s foray into the low intervention world of natural wines, more focused on brightness, acidity, freshness and vegetal touches. The vineyards are untouched by chemicals and focus heavily on biodiversity to ensure the health of the soil and grapes.
